As their daughter, I am a little bit biased. My parents are one of the ingredients that keep this Library growing. Finding great staff is difficult, finding great volunteers is almost impossible. We have so many wonderful volunteers that keep us going. Noone works harder for the Library and our community than my parents. If they are not at the Library, you can find them volunteering for the McCall Community Center where my dad sits on the Board or at their church Cascade Assembly of God in Cascade, Idaho. If they have any free time you will also see them helping the Idaho Children’s Theatre, McCall Arts and Humanities Council and Long Valley Preservation Society. Oh and somehow they raise 3 grandkids. My parents love Valley County and love to see it thrive. Be sure to check out this write up from the Idaho Out Of School Network.

Idaho Afterschool Champions Recognized
Boise (4/24/24) – The Idaho Out-of-School Network today announced winners of the Idaho
Afterschool Champions awards celebrating community members who help youth learn and
thrive outside of regular classroom hours. Award winners are recognized across the country
during National Afterschool Professional Appreciation Week (April 22-26) for their important
contributions to youth and communities
In Donnelly, Idaho’s Afterschool Champions are Clifford and Kathy Scheline, volunteers at the
Donnelly Public Library. Six years ago, Clifford and Kathy began volunteering with the Library’s
after-school program. The building was so small they had to meet outside. Now, the Dragon
Readers’ Club is a huge success and the kids all call them “Grandpa and Grandma Library.” Papa
shovels walkways so children can reach our outdoor classrooms, fills propane for our two
outdoor heaters, and constantly builds fires in our outdoor fire pit. Grandma takes blankets
home to wash, makes snacks and brings treats. Both offer laps to sit on, encouragement and
time for reading. Donnelly Elementary was recently awarded the top IRI in the State of Idaho.
Many believe that is because every kid in the area has been afforded the opportunity to have a
“grandparent”; to read with. From providing healthy snacks, to shoveling to sitting down and
reading with a young child, Papa and Grandma are always there with support and attention.
ION works to assure that every child in Idaho can participate in a high-quality, out-of-school
youth program. The organization provides tools, resources and technical assistance to youth
programs across the state. Winners will receive their award at public event during the
statewide Power Up Summit to be held at the JUMP Center in Boise on September 18-19.
