Florida Countdown To The Census

  1. Book List: EPIC Florida
  2. Math: DISNEY   (Disney World is located in Orlando, Florida)  I found some great Disney themed Codebreaker worksheets on TeachingSquared.  Disney on TeachingSquared
  3. Science:  Kennedy Space Center is located in Florida. We can’t discuss Florida without adding NASA

NASA has been featuring NASA at home.   It is the most jam packed website for Stay At Home fun that I have found yet.  Learning Space at Home is broke down by grade level and includes videos, activities and more.  The site is full of coloring books, science videos, and activities to explore space from your living room.  NASA at Home is really worthy of a few days of discovery.

Inspiration is possibly my favorite page on the NASA website.

4.Writing: No matter where you live, you can join other FWAY members in our Online Writing Club. Just complete the form below and you’ll get an invitation to our group, which is run through the Slack app*. Use the club to ask questions about writing or FWAY programs, brainstorm story ideas, get to know one another…

FWAY is Florida Writers Association Youth Program and it is a writer’s club.  FYAM

You don’t need to join the writing club in Florida, but find someone to share your writing with.  It may be your classroom, a friend, or perhaps your family.  Share your writing with someone.

5. History: Marjory Stoneman Douglas   The “Lady of the Everglades” was not only a pioneer advocate of a unique ecosystem, but also keenly involved in issues of race relations, women’s rights and urban development.   Write a short paper on the Everglades using books from  Epic .

6. Art: DANCE

Salsa is a type of music and dance of hispanic origin. Salsa music is based on Cuban music. This is a fusion of musical ideas.  Florida is known for their Salsa Dancing.  We don’t want you to be to missing out on physical movement during your #StayAtHome time. Try to learn this kids’ salsa dance.  SALSA

7. Book Pick: Because of Winn Dixie

I love Kate Dicamillo.  You may not know but I grew up in a preacher’s home.  I felt a connection with Opal.  The story is about the summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket-and comes out with a dog. A big, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of humor. A dog she names Winn-Dixie. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE.  After you read it you can tell me if you think Miss Franny Block or Miss Sherry Scheline is the better librarian.   🙂
