Candlemas

Here is McCall, we’ve survived January (almost). Today is the last day of this winteriest of all wintry months in the mountains. We’re now moving into a new moon and into the ancient Celtic holiday of Brigid or Imbolc, also known to the Christian world as Candlemas Day. In 2022, Candlemas Day will be on February 3, MST – it is the astronomical half-way point in the Earth’s journey between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. Can you feel the days lengthening?

In the European world of the ancient Celts, the Earth would begin quickening now – coming to life. Ewes would be bearing lambs and be “in milk” (Imbolc). While we’re not quite there yet in the mountains, we can enjoy signs of spring – soon the red-winged blackbirds will return. In cold sheds and barns, baby goats and lambs will start arriving. Seed catalogs come out. Walks along the river in Riggins beckon. We breathe a little easier.

The goddess Brigid was associated with both fire and water, perhaps corresponding to her affinity with both the creative heat of poetry and the nourishing, cooling power of healing. This week presents the perfect time to nourish, cleanse, hydrate, and heal. It also presents the perfect time to create, to dream, to make. Celebrate the power of imagination! This is a good time to commit to being reborn – what do you long to transform?
