A Mermaid’s Tale Day 5

Day 5 of camp started with Miss Sherry reading The Nez Perce by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, to give the kids some history on the tribe who inhabited our town before the settlers arrived.  After giving the campers some cultural background and historical perspective, they were allowed some free time.  Several of the kids decided to play Uno, while others checked on the sea creatures and Orbeez.

Next, we gathered to read another version of “The Little Mermaid”, which involved Strawberry Shortcake and friends, and was written by Megan E. Bryant.  After Miss Sherry read the story, she asked the kids for some similarities and differences between it and the Disney version of the story.  We also read Good Night Mermaids by Adam Gamble.

After the second round of stories the campers were given some more free time before lunch.  For lunch we had a choice of fish or chicken nuggets, with cucumbers, and watermelon for dessert.

During lunch, one of our campers said he really didn’t like veggies, so Miss Sherry read Me and My Veggies by Isaac Whitlatch, which gave us all a good laugh.

After lunch, we played our version of “Capture the Flag”, where campers had to try and capture a large shell, as well as the proper color of sea glass for each team.  It was boys versus girls, and not only did they have a maze of obstacles to face, but they also had to get past the “mermaids”, made up of our middle school and high school helpers.  It was the best 2 of 3, with the girls winning 2 rounds and the boys winning 1.

This week of camp has been so much fun!  We can’t believe it’s almost time for school again.
