Destination: Washington D.C.
We read Dream Builder by Kelly Starling Lyons, a book about architect Philip Freelon. He designed the National Museum of African American History and Culture, one of the Smithsonian museums.
Miss Sherry loves this book because not only does representation matter for people of color, but also people of different abilities. Philip Freelon struggled with reading and went on to become successful. Our students who struggle with reading learned about how they can overcome small obstacles.
Miss Sherry picked this book up when she was in Washington D.C. last October. She also purchased the other book we read which was This is Washington D.C.
The kids all love our teen helpers, Cason is one of their favorites. Here is his view on D.C.

Our Countdown to the Census has begun.
January 14th we began with Washington D.C. We received a package from Senator Jim Risch. The kids learned about Washington D.C. and began to learn about the Census.
The kids began working on their passports. Each day the kids will be able to add a picture to their passports.
They were able to identify several landmarks in Washington D.C. as well as answer government questions. Special thanks to Senator Jim Risch’s Office for sending our kids mail.
If you are interested in sending our library a package for our journey around the United States please mail it to:
