Alaska became the 49th state in 1959.
Alaska, the most northern state gets a head start on the census. Alaska’s Toksook Bay is where the Census is set to begin.
“In rural Alaska, however, the mail system can be unreliable. More than 80 percent of communities in the state are not connected by roads or highways. One of the bureau’s latest census innovations – an option to fill out an online questionnaire – throws another “curveball” at what’s known as Bush Alaska, adds Gore, who also heads the Cook Inlet Housing Authority in Anchorage.” NPR
“There are vast areas of Alaska that don’t have good internet connection,” she says. “They may have one computer in their community, and that’s at the school.”
The remote villages in Alaska where the census begins are still primarily accessible by sled. On January 21st, 2020 the United States Census Bureau in partnership with the United States Marshalls will open the 2020 Census. We will be celebrating the beginning of the 2020 Census by learning about Alaska and the mode of travel to Toksook Bay.
The Idaho Sled Dog Challenge has provided our area a unique opportunity to learn about the Iditarod and the daily uses of sled dogs. On January 22nd we will not only be celebrating Alaska but we will be joined by our own local Musher, Kevin Daugherty.

Countdown to the Census: Alaska
The first person in the nation to be counted in the 2020 U.S. Census will be in Toksook Bay in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. On January 21, 2020, the coastal community will launch the national effort to count every person in the U.S. The rest of the nation will begin its count in mid-March; the unique weather and transportation issues of rural Alaska make the three-month head start necessary.
