Arkansas

Today we read Arkansas by Patrick Perish on Sora.

Arkansas (State Profiles): Patrick Perish: 9781644873755: Amazon.com: Books

Did you know…

  • anyone can keep the diamonds they find in Crater of Diamonds State Park?
  • Arkansan Bernell Austin invented deep-fried dill pickles?
  • famous musician Johnny Cash was born there?

Sora is a wonderful resource for students. Read our blog post HERE for more information!

We also talked about idioms and figures of speech, which was relevant to our special snack of possum pie. No, it’s not a meat pie – it’s a chocolate pie trying to trick you with its whipped cream topping. Delicious!

1. Book List: Arkansas on EPIC

2. Math :

Census is the process of counting citizens of USA; it typically estimates the rate of population growth of the 50 states. United States constitution has directed to conduct enumeration once every 10 years beginning in 1790, although the first Federal Census for Arkansas was taken in 1830. If the Census occurs every 10 years, how many times has Arkansas been part of the Census?

3. Science:  DIAMONDS

Research diamonds. Find out how they are formed.  Crater of Diamonds

4.Writing: Arkansas has several caves.   Write a short story and add cave exploration as part of that story.  Spelunking is a fun addition to stories.  Caves often hold mystery and intrigue.  Arkansas Caves

5.Recommended Book Pick: I Know Why A Caged Bird Sings

A free bird leaps on the back
Of the wind and floats downstream
Till the current ends and dips his wing
In the orange suns rays
And dares to claim the sky.

But a BIRD that stalks down his narrow cage
Can seldom see through his bars of rage
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.

But a caged BIRD stands on the grave of dreams
His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with
A fearful trill of things unknown
But longed for still and his
Tune is heard on the distant hill
For the caged bird sings of freedom.

Maya Angelou

6. History: You can explore the Museum Of Native American History  from your home. You can view the musuem artifacts online and don’t need to be in Bentonville, Arkansas.

7. Art: Draw A Diamond

How To Draw A Diamond

Bonus:

Go on a diamond hunt.   Find an area in your yard that has small rocks.  Sort them and label them.  See what gems you can find in your own yard.
