A Mermaid’s Tail Day 1

Our 4th week of summer library camp has kicked off, and it’s all about mermaids!

Our day started off with all of the campers getting new backpacks filled with school supplies, for the imminent new school year.  Next, we met with Miss Sherry to discuss the plan for the day.  After dividing the campers into groups for the stations we would do, Miss Sherry and Miss Abbie got ready, while Miss Vicki supervised as the kids played in the small tipi and took turns dressing up in the fun costumes.

After everything was set up, we joined Miss Sherry in the big tipi to hear the classic tale of “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen.  Next, we broke into our groups, with Miss Sherry supervising silent reading, Miss Abbie watching kids at the bounce house, Miss Vicki helping with karaoke, and our middle school helper, Alexis, assisting with mermaid bracelet making.

After our stations, Miss Sherry had the kids try “ocean water” with sharks and fish.  After their snack, Miss Sherry, Miss Vicki, and the middle and high school helpers assisted the kids in making set decorations for a play they will put on later in the week, depicting the story of “The Little Mermaid”.

After we had worked on the sets for awhile, it was time to get ready for lunch.  We joined Miss Sherry in the big tipi to discuss our lunch plans, and to sample a wonderful tomato from the library’s garden.  Lunch consisted of some wonderful breaded halibut, tomatoes, grapes, and a salad, with pudding  for dessert.  We also took a walk to thank Jill at the Trading Post for donating to our program.  We surprised the kids with Huckleberry Ice Cream 🍦

After lunch the campers continued to work on their set decorations, and were also given time to play in the water bounce house to cool off.

In the afternoon we got to dig through mermaid stones (a collection of rocks, sea glass and shells) Everyone got to choose 5 pieces to keep.

Our first day of camp was a blast, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the week has in store!

Olivia was captain for the day.
